Forum Topic: Doxycycline Purchase in China
Nick1234:
Hey everyone,
I've been prescribed doxycycline for an infection I picked up while traveling. It's been a nightmare trying to get it here in China due to some restrictions and regulations. Has anyone had any luck purchasing it over the counter or through pharmacies? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
TravelMedic:
Hi Nick1234,
I understand how frustrating it can be when you're dealing with health issues abroad. In China, doxycycline is classified as a prescription-only medication. This means that without a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner in the country, you won't be able to buy it over-the-counter.
If you have seen a doctor here and obtained a prescription, you should be good to go at any pharmacy. If not, your best bet would be to visit a hospital or clinic to get one.

Hello Nick1234,
I second TravelMedic's advice. Doxycycline is indeed regulated in China and requires a proper prescription.
If you're in an urgent situation and need immediate access, consider visiting international clinics or pharmacies catering specifically to expats. They might have more flexible protocols compared to local ones.
Also, if it’s possible for your home country doctor to provide a digital copy of the prescription, that could sometimes help at reputable pharmacies.
Nick1234:
Thanks TravelMedic and JetLagDoc,
That's helpful information. I'll try visiting an international clinic here in Shanghai to see what they recommend. Hopefully, it won't be too much hassle!

You’re welcome, Nick1234!
Just a heads-up: some clinics might require proof of your travel insurance or health coverage before issuing prescriptions. It's always good to have these documents handy.
Additionally, if you're planning another trip soon and want to avoid this issue, consider filling the prescription at home before leaving. This way, you can take it with you in a proper medical container, which is also legal as long as it’s for personal use.
Nick1234:
Great tip, DrTraveler! I'll definitely keep that in mind next time. For now, I'm heading to the clinic tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed!
