Forum Thread: Prednisone 10 - What to Expect?

Posted by: CuriousCat

Hi there! I've been prescribed Prednisone 10 mg for my recent asthma flare-up. Can someone who's taken it before share their experience? Any side effects I should watch out for? Thanks a lot!

Hello CuriousCat,

Thank you for reaching out with your question. Prednisone is a corticosteroid that helps to reduce inflammation and can be very effective in managing conditions like asthma when used correctly.

The 10 mg dose you've been prescribed is quite common. It’s typically used short-term to alleviate symptoms associated with inflammatory or allergic reactions, such as swelling, redness, itching, and irritation.

Some of the side effects that might occur include:- Increased appetite and weight gain- Difficulty sleeping or insomnia - Mood swings or irritability - Changes in blood sugar levels (be especially mindful if you have diabetes)

It’s important to take Prednisone as directed by your healthcare provider. If you experience any severe side effects like vision changes, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, or signs of infection such as fever and sore throat, contact your doctor immediately.

Would love to hear from others who’ve used this medication too!

Hi CuriousCat! I was on Prednisone 10 mg for a couple weeks last year due to an asthma flare-up. It really helped me breathe easier and reduced the inflammation in my airways, which was amazing.

However, it did have some side effects. I found myself wanting to eat everything in sight! My appetite went through the roof. I gained about 5 pounds during that time, but it was manageable as long as I kept track of what I ate.

Sleep disturbances were also an issue for me; sometimes I'd be awake till 3 AM and couldn't go back to sleep. But once I finished my course, things returned to normal.

One piece of advice: try not to stop the medication abruptly without your doctor's consent as it can lead to withdrawal symptoms. Always taper off slowly under medical guidance!

That’s a great point, AsthmaWarrior! Tapering off is crucial to avoid any rebound effects or withdrawal symptoms.

CuriousCat, if you have specific concerns about the dosage or how long you should be on it, always reach out to your prescribing doctor. They will best know what's right for your condition and health history. If any side effects become too uncomfortable or severe, don't hesitate to contact them as well.

Stay healthy and take care!
