Forum Title: Prednisone for Cats - What to Expect?

Posted by CatLover123 on March 15th, 2023 at 2:45 PM

Hi everyone,I'm new here and I've just been told my kitty, Luna, needs prednisone. She's got some skin issues that are driving her crazy. Can someone explain what this drug does? And is it safe for cats?

Hi CatLover123,

Welcome to the forum! It's great that you're here to gather information about your kitty Luna. Prednisone is a corticosteroid, which means it has anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressing properties. In veterinary medicine, we use it for various conditions including allergies, skin problems like those your cat might be experiencing, inflammatory diseases, and even some types of cancer.

When given to cats, prednisone works by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system response that could be causing or exacerbating Luna's skin issues. The dosage and frequency will depend on her specific condition and how she responds to it.

It’s important to follow your vet's instructions closely as improper use can lead to side effects such as increased thirst, hunger, urination, lethargy, and in some cases more serious complications like diabetes or immunosuppression if used long-term.

If you have any concerns about giving Luna this medication, it’s always best to consult with your vet for personalized advice.

Best regards,
VetDocOnDuty

Thank you so much VetDocOnDuty! That was super helpful. So does this mean it's a short-term treatment or could it be something my cat needs for a longer period?

Hi CatLover123,

That depends entirely on the condition being treated and how Luna responds to it. Some conditions may require long-term management with prednisone, while others can be effectively treated with a shorter course.

If her skin issues are due to allergies (like seasonal or food), then once the allergen is removed from her environment or diet, she might only need short-term treatment. But if the underlying issue is more complex, like an autoimmune disease, she may need long-term management.

The key here is close monitoring and regular check-ups with your vet to ensure that Luna remains healthy while on this medication. If there are any side effects noted during her course of treatment, it’s crucial to report them to your vet so the dosage can be adjusted if necessary or other treatments considered.

Best regards,

I hope Luna feels better soon! My cat was also on prednisone for a skin allergy and it helped quite a bit. Just make sure to watch out for her appetite as she might get really hungry!
